Travel Diaries - Rome, Italy, Europe 2016 (6)

The most beautiful things in life are not things. They are people, and places, and memories, and pictures. They're feelings and moments and smiles and laughter.
Alright, here I am sharing the last leg of my Euro trip. Rome's cityscape is an exhilarating spectacle. You can indulge in a serene or romantic getaway while experiencing the rich history, breathtaking views and distinctive culture.

Accommodation:
We stayed at Smart Hotel which is a 4-star property which is a 5 minute from the Rome station/Roma Termini. It is a perfect location for sightseeing. However, the rooms are small like most of the  Read my review on Tripadvisor here: Smart Hotel, Rome.

Things to do as a tourist:
- Do not forget to flip a coin in Trevi fountain over your shoulders and make a wish! You can cover Spanish steps and Trevi Fountain and Pantheon together.
The fountain was built at the end point of the aqueduct, at the junction of three roads. These three streets (tre vie) give the Trevi Fountain its name, the Three Street Fountain.

"The steps hit the big screen in Audrey Hepburn film A Roman Holiday, where the steps' status as a popular meeting place made them the perfect location for Gregory Peck's character to 'accidentally' bump into Hepburn. They've also been mentioned in a Bob Dylan song and featured in an Everybody Loves Raymond episode."
"A famed sight for tourists from throughout the world, the Trevi Fountain is quite the stage prop as well! Besides La Dolce Vita, when Anita Ekberg jumped into the Trevi Fountain with her clothes on, the massive monument has been featured in many films including Roman Holiday, Three Coins in the Fountain and even The Lizzie McGuire Movie. The fountain is even replicated at Epcot in Walt Disney World!"
- Rome's Colosseum, amphitheatre remains a popular tourist destination, as well as an iconic symbol of Rome and its long, tumultuous history. We took the skip-the-line tour along with Palatine hill. It was really crowded and hot.
- While away hours at streetside cafes and fashionable people-watching on gorgeous piazzas which are an integral part of the Roman experience.

Travelling Tips:
- A trip to this city can be eternally confusing for first-time visitors. Be prepared to walk. Use google maps and it is pretty accurate.
We loved walking and getting lost in the tangled lanes of the historic centre and wandering aimlessly, gawking at architectural pieces and idling around the picturesque streets.
- I am sure many people do not like Italian food and can't sustain eating Italian meals in Italy all the time. I would give an insider tip to hunt for non-Italian food joints on Tripadvisor.
We discovered African/Ethiopian cuisine (Check out Africa Ristorante) which actually tastes better than Indian food. It includes staple food called Injeera.
- I highly recommend booking all the tours in advance. It is good to book a tour guide as every place in Rome is doused with history and doing a tour is always a memorable and fun experience.
- Honestly, out of all the places in Italy, Rome was really crowded and the scorching heat was quite unbearable at time. If you do not like summers, I would recommend visiting in May or September when it is not really a peak season.
