Travel Diaries - Salzburg, Austria, Europe 2016 (2)

So after Vienna, we boarded the train to Salzburg with our cousins. The journey is scenic and the 2-hour drive is fun.

Salzburg is an Austrian city on the German border with views of Eastern Alps. It is known as the birthplace of Mozart and setting for the film "The Sound of Music".

Accommodation:
We stayed with our cousins in Salzburg who stay half an hour away from the main town. They took good care of us. Their home is surreal and dreamlike away from the hustle and bustle. Make sure you check out the video below. It is compressed here but if you follow me on Instagram or Facebook you will know.

Culinary Adventures:
- You must try Austrian cuisine. It mainly includes Chicken Schnitzel. This is a classic Austrian dish which is whipped together with eggs and bread crumbs. It is fried to a crisp. It is usually served with cucumber salad, potato salad or kopfsalad (lettuce tossed with a sweetened vinaigrette dressing).
- You can also try their beef or pork dishes.
- You can wash it down with their famous gold-hued beer (I do not remember the name).
- Sip some Weissburgunder wines.
- If you have a sweet tooth you can surely indulge in fluffy apple strudel or chocolatey Sachel Torte.

Things to do:
- Mondsee has a gorgeous crescent lake. This picturesque lake is in a small town  Mondsee near Salzburg.
- Wherever in Austria, try their Austrian cuisine. All the salads and even main course comprise of fried chicken. Sip their wine or gold-hued beer.
- Enjoy a stroll along Makartsteg bridge in Salzburg where a sea of padlocks is attached to the fence. Thousands of lovers have left engraved locks leaving behind the legacy of love.
- M32 is a must-see attraction for every tourist. It is in the museum of modern art and perched on the top of Monchsberg. You can enjoy the panoramic views of the city from the river Salzach to the Hohensalzburg Fortress and the enjoy the Alps from their outdoor terrace.
We did not go to the museum, though. You would need a ticket and go to this place via escalator.
- Salzburger Dom which is a 17th-century baroque cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Salzburg, dedicated to Saint Rupert of Salzburg. It is also the site of Mozart's baptism.
- Getreidegasse (Grain Lane) - this is the lane where you will spot Mozart's birthplace. It is a busy shopping street.
- We skipped the Mirabell palace as we saw the magnificent gardens of Schonbrunn palace in Vienna.

Travelling tips:
- Include Innsbruck in your itinerary. It is only 2 hours away from Salzburg and on the bucket list of every traveller. Trust me, it is dreamlike!
- If you want to leave something behind then lock your love on Makartsteg bridge in Salzburg. I would recommend you to get your own lock from home as the locks their cost 8-10 euros.
- I kept it a 2-day trip but if you have more time visit the hangar which is a red bull hangar at the Salzburg airport.
- You can also take a sound of music tour if that intrigues you.
- If you are done with Salzburg you can head to Wolfgangssee which is a beautiful lake and 1-hour drive from Salzburg.
- Take home some famous chocolates from Salzburg called Mozartkugel ("Mozart ball") in 1890 which are easily available everywhere.
