Indian Fashion Blog - Food Review - Burrp at Bombay Canteen

If you looking for a gourmet meal with all the 'Indian-ness' look no further than Bombay Canteen. It is a place which every mumbaikar must go at least once. Ever since it opened its shutters, it has been a crowd pleaser being not only an ode to the city of Mumbai but also other parts of India.

Last weekend I got invite for the culinary adventure at the Bombay Canteen in association with Food Bloggers Association of India (FBAI) and Burrp team.
It was a specially curated menu for the bloggers with some new and old dishes. After conversation with the one of the co founders, New York Returned Mr Floyd Cardoz briefed us that the menu is usually updated every 3 months and he travels to all the remotest places in India to try the new dishes and experiment with exotic flavours and ingredients.

To begin with there were all fancy and 'desi' drinks for the winter season which I am personally not fond of, being calorie conscious.
Coming to the meal, there were interesting appetizers labelled as "Chhota". 'Cheesling Bhel' was an innovative dish tweaked with kohlrabi, apples and mustard oil dressing. 'Kejriwal Toast' in my opinion is the most hyped dish which has got rave reviews. I personally loved the 'Mushroom Seekh' and the highlight was 'Spicy Chettinad Chicken Desi Tacos' on methi theplas.
Coming to the mains, there was a pork dish which I don't have and 'Sarson Ka Saag' with corn bread and not roti was a bit too sweet for my liking and didn't live up to my expectations. The star of the evening was of course 'Videshi Style Baingan Bake' which was elevated to new heights with Maharashtran peanut masala, spicy tomato curry and mustard 'dahi'. The dish was executed perfectly and something I would want to try again.

I am really not an Indian dessert person so cant really give my views about the 'Gajar Halwa Toffee Pudding' with roasted cashews and tamarind toffee sauce. Well, isn't the name intriguing enough?

In other news, do not forget to check out the new and more user friendly Burrp app. It has cool new features like tip and a better layout.
It was a perfect Saturday afternoon filled with conversation, food, fun, contests and gifts!

'Choriz Per Eedu' with soft cooked egg and potato salli

What I wore!

Verdict:
A must visit place to take your taste buds on a culinary journey. The food is elevated to new heights and gets a tweak from styling and presentation. Surely one place where I will always take my non Mumbaikar friends for a gastronomical delight.

Healthy Tip:
It was a total cheat meal (which was planned though), the only dish close to healthy was 'Chicken Chettinad Desi Tacos' (on methi thepla) and 'Kejriwal Toast' (one could have the egg and leave the bread). Focus on more protein ingredients like egg and chicken while indulging. Other than that from the regular menu make sure you try steamed fish in banana leaves which is high on nutritional value and executed perfectly.

What I like?
A modern and edgy take on the dishes with local ingredients.
- 'Chicken Chettinad Desi Tacos' and 'Videshi Style Baingan Bake' were star of the evenings.
- The menu is not exhaustive but simple. They have not tried too hard to make it fancy and over the top.
- The meal without alcohol is totally budget friendly and wont make a hole in your pocket.

What I didn't like?
- Some of the dishes were hyped and too sweet for my liking.
