Healthy, quick and easy breakfast options

They say eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a common man and a dinner like a pauper. Having doughnuts or pastries or indian paranthas for breakfast is like committing a sin for me. You rush to work and probably grab something on the way, may be a muffin or a bagel. Unfortunately this is not the healthy way to start your day. At this time of the day your blood sugar levels are high and gorging on a pastry or donut is certainly not a healthy option. It will only leave you more hungry later with sweet cravings.

Being from Punjabi family I grew up eating paranthas with butter or kulchas (Indian Cuisine) for breakfast. It took me years to change my lifestyle and eat clean. I try not  to binge on junk and eat on a whim. I plan my cheat meals and wallow in the luxury of good food occasionally and that makes it worth it.

It is the best time to consume carbs. Make sure you fuel your body every single morning and rev up your metabolism. A healthy breakfast is a combination of whole grain foods, protein servings like an egg or fish, low fat dairy full of calcium and fruits or vegetables.

Oatmeal/Porridge
Oatmeal in skimmed milk is one of the best breakfast options. You can make little extra oatmeal and even warm it up the next day. They stabilize the appetite and low in GI that means it wont plummet your blood glucose level. Pour a little honey but go easy on it. Don't go for boxed cereals. It can also be your dinner option.

Whole eggs/Egg preparations
- Whole egg sandwiches
- Omelette in olive oil
- Hard boiled eggs with steamed broccoli
Any breakfast is incomplete without eggs especially if you don't take your protein shake.

Whole grains
- Whole grain breads with a thin layer of organic peanut butter or almond butter or raw honey.
- Grilled sandwich with loads of veggies. Use dressings like salsa, mint sauce, yoghurt pepper or hummus.

Beans
Beans can of any form: kidney beans, or baked beans or black eye beans. Have it steamed or baked.

Fruits
Fruits are beneficial only if consumed empty stomach. They don't make your internal system acidic.

Low fat dairy
- Skimmed milk/low fat yoghurt/Greek Yoghurt
- Make a yoghurt preparation and 7-8 almond or walnuts
- Top it with fresh berries and a drizzle of honey

Scrambled Tofu/low fat cottage cheese
Add some veggies, onions, green peppers , etc. Stir fry the tofu with little soy sauce, black pepper, garlic powder in olive oil as a cooking medium

Some of the other options which are not easily available in India are tuna salad, quinoa or quinoa flakes or french toast frittata. I am gonna try out some healthy, quick and easy breakfast and dinner recipes like tuna salad and post it soon on my blog.

If you know some easy oatmeal and tofu recipes then do let me know.

  14. These are excellent healthy breakfast ideas. I'm not very good when it comes to breakfast. I normally just have a glass of milk. I should probably eat some oatmeal or something as well.
